Being A Child of God

Being A Child Of God

As we grew up, we probably heard that we were a child of God numerous times. But, I can guarantee that most of us never really understood what that meant. As a result, this simple truth gets forgotten, because we don't know that true meaning of being a child. So, what does Jesus mean when He says, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3)

Obviously, Jesus is not talking about a physical change that needs to occur, because that is impossible! Jesus, is talking a change of heart that we must have, so that we become like children. This change of heart that we are called to have is everything, for if we don't have this, our relationship with God becomes one of slave and master, rather than child and Father. So, what does this relationship as a child of God look like? I think this can be answered by looking at Psalm 131, which states "But I have calmed and quite my soul, like a child quieted at its mother's breast; like a child that is quieted is my soul."

The aspect that our soul is to be quieted is something that makes me ponder. As I was praying into this, I came to think what makes a child so different than an adult? Why can't my soul be quieted like an adult? And the answer became clear, because a child is completely dependent on their father. A child cannot do anything apart from their parents, and the parents know this! So, the parent wake up the child, provides meals, playtime, and whatever else were to happen throughout the day. So what does this mean for us? God, our Father, plans every second of our day.

There is not one moment that is not planned for you, everything you encounter everyday was made specifically just for you. This is just how much God loves you, that He does everything just for you! Just like a child, we should not be worried about what is to come next throughout our day. Think about it, a child should not be stressed out over what will happen in their day, or what certain outcomes will be, because they have trust that their parents will take care of it all. This is what our mentality should be as well! The soul of a child is quiet, because there is an immense amount of trust in their parents that all will be well. The child has no reason to not trust their parents, because they know that their parents love them.

In our life, it seems as if the craziness never slows down, and as a result, we can get frustrated and our trust in God goes away. God desires for us to recognize His love, and that He has planned everything out for us. With this in mind, let us remind ourselves in the midst of our struggles and hardships, that the Father is waiting for us to go back to Him and be comforted. You and I are children of God. We are children of the One who created everything we see, and He loves you. The more we can recognize that God is in control, the more we can become like children.

In the words of Saint Padre Pio, "Pray, Hope, and Don't Worry!"
